Packing for a Cruise
Packing for a Cruise is best to start by making a list and then by keeping a sense of humor. It's more practical to pack lightly so as to avoid spending too much time sorting through your luggage when getting ready to attend your cruise events. The most popular cruises will last from 3 to 7 days so key essentials is all that is needed. The three to 4 day cruises are normally best for first timers. This will give you an idea as to how it may be during a longer cruise and what to expect. The Eastern Caribbean cruises have many islands in close proximity and offer more stops with flexible schedules. For example, the typical 7 to eight day eastern cruise may have the following type of schedule. If departing from New York, it may leave at 4:00 p.m., and day one and two set for "Exciting and Fun Day at sea". You will be enjoying getting familiar with exciting surroundings, sun bathing, reading and all kinds of other activities. On Day 3, the cruise ship would arrive in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and then depart around midnight arriving the following morning (Day 4) in St. Thomas/or St. John. At 6:00 p.m. it would depart again to arrive at Day 5 in the island of Tortola. On Day 6 and 7, it's once again time for "Exciting and Fun day" at sea arriving back to New York on day 8. This is just an example of what a schedule may be, however is best to consult with a travel agent and ask for the type of cruise you may enjoy best.
You may ask yourself, What to wear on a cruise? Well, keep comfort in mind and clothing that does not wrinkle that much. You'll normally have a chance to dress up on two nights of the longer cruises, and one night on the shorter ones. These events are for the Captain's Cocktail party and the Gala Farewell Dinner. For women a comfortable cocktail dress, elegant womens pant-suit, or an evening dress or gown is best. On regular evenings you can dress casually for dinner, however no shorts or tank tops may be allowed in the dining area. Remember, this is a unique kind of vacation so enjoy the elegance. For those not wanting to dress-up, most cruises have informal type restaurants available. A sexy easy to wear casual dress or for men a soft cotton shirt with elegant slacks may work nicely.
A lot of time, effort and dedication goes into providing cruises that could be affordable for the average family or couple. In years past only the most wealthy could embark on a family cruise vacation. Courtesy, and a positive outlook will add to a more pleasant cruise experience. Planning ahead, doing some simple research, asking questions, and avoiding over consumption of food or alcoholic beverages will ensure a great unique time at sea. Some cruise companies offer Vacation Protection Plans that if you type the request on their search box at the home page, it will give you a list of the type of coverage offered and a toll-free number to call for more information. This could add an extra peace of mind since unfortunately the unexpected could occur in everyday life whether at land or at sea. Some public libraries have travel videos and one by public television, Going Places, has a caribbean cruise educational piece. Take a few minutes to read your cruise safety packet. Ask your cruise line for additional safety instructions or materials if you have further questions. Enjoy your trip with safety in mind.
Dressing comfortably and in light fabrics is best for the warm cruise destinations. Casual dress, cool fabrics, or short sets for example, is the usual order of the day both on board and in ports. A sexy dress, slacks, sun dresses, halter tops, set of athletic wear etc. are great for women. A good pair of rubber-soled sandals or sneakers to wear on deck is excellent, and one of your favorite pair of walking shoes. One or two sets of swimwear comes in handy for the average person. The older one could be used to sit anywhere and to liberally apply tanning lotion, and the second for taking great photographs or to attend a deck party. You might wish to bring a light jacket for cool evenings. Also easy to fold inexpensive rain gear in case of a sudden rain shower. Then again some of you may enjoy getting caught in the rain. A favorite hat and a scarf for women in case of a windy day. Men on cruises enjoy comfortable casual wear, colorful shirts, and for the formal dinner a great tuxedo, a favorite suit and tie combination, or a fancy sport jacket with a sexy tie and slacks. Practical as men tend to be. Other useful items are zip-loc bags, an extra inexpensive watch, copies of your travel documents and place one in each of your travel luggage. A camera, and a small travel alarm clock are also very helpful. Important also is sun protection, personal grooming items, prescription drugs or essential medications. Let close members of your family know about your trip and bring a small address book with important addresse's and phone numbers. A pre-paid phone card is also great to stay in touch if needed during ports visits, and you could send post cards to friends or family if you have the extra time. Remember that time goes by fast, so enjoy the unique experience of a cruise vacation. The Ocean has inspired poets, writers, philosophers and individuals from all walks of life. Enjoy it!
