Microdermabrasion Treatments
Frequently asked questions about Microdermabrasion.

1. What is Microdermabrasion?

Answer: Microdermabrasion ("Microderm") is an efficient and unique work area oriented method of providing exfoliation of the epidermis (top skin layer). Delicate areas get more gentle passes while other problem areas could get more attention to encourage skin renewal at the basal layer, and stimulation of the fibroblasts in the dermis. Fibroblasts are responsible for the production of collagen and elastin. There are two types of systems one that uses crystals and another system that is crystal free which produces a more instant smoother feel. Both systems use a combination of exfoliation and suction, one via diamond tips (crystal free system) and the other by inert aluminum oxide crystals which get projected on the surface of the skin and have a hardness of 9 close to that in diamonds which have a hardness of 10. The dermabrading or gentle peeling of the skin along with settings in the vaccum pressure (suction) encourages the re-alignment of collagen and elastin producing a more even and healthier looking skin surface.

2. How is it done?

Answer: The technician will cleanse the skin, re-chart any specific concerns or goals by the client and make notes on existing conditions. A specific pattern is followed and in the crystal free system a gentle diamond tip is chosen and the exfoliated skin gets resurfaced. In the crystal system the technician uniformly projects the inert aluminum oxide crystals by way of a hand piece which gently exfoliates the outer layers of the epidermis. This action smooths out imperfections. The crystals, along with the exfoliated dead skin cells are vacuumed simultaneously back into a closed filter container and discarded. A cooling gentle compress rinse and cooling mask follows. Other professional products may be applied according to skin type and conditions with an appropriate sunscreen for sun protection. Note: The speed of the crystals on the skin surface along with the vacuum pressure further stimulates the fibroblasts. Crystal microderm exfoliation has a better drying effect for acne oily skin.

3. What conditions could be treated?

Answer: Conditions such as fine facial lines, hyperpigmentation (dark spots), sun damage, mild acne scarring, and uneven skin texture can all benefit from Microderm treatments.

4. What are the results of a Microderm?

Answer: The combination of the exfoliation and the settings in the vacuum pressure stimulate the fibroblasts to produce more collagen and elastin. This process will improve the tone, texture, and overall appearance of the skin. Lines will become softer, pores are minimized and the skins looks better, smoother and softer. The increased lymph and blood flow to the surface by the skin resurfacing also helps bring fresh oxygen, nutrients and immunity factors to the skin that stimulate the cell renewal process.

5.What will my skin look like after a treatment?

Answer: The skin will have a warm pink glow that will diminish over the next 2 hours and will appear healthier. The soothing mask and special skin cooling and calming products help reduce possible facial redness. Within 48 hours you could see the best results with the skin feeling smooth, tighter and more radiant.

6. Are there any special precautions needed before or after a treatment?

Answer: Always follow the "Rule of three": No Retinol or AHA (alpha hydroxy acids or glycolics) usage at least three days before or after the microderm treatment. Clients that condition their skin with these products could stop ideally a week before and continue it after a week post microderm. Answer all questions in the form given during your first consultation. Those who experience cold sores need to note this in the consultation form, and also take their Zovirax prescription given by their physicians to help avoid an outbreak. Follow your physicians recommendations, and it may normally be taken 3 days before and following 3 days after a treatment. Ask your family physician if you have any more questions. Avoid tanning your skin a week prior or after a microdermabrasion treatment.

7. How often does the treatment need to be repeated?

Answer: This depends on the condition and personal desires of the client. Each individual treatment has a positive cumulative effect on the skin. One treatment is great, however 3 to 7 are normally recommended for in a series special skin conditions could be treated more effectively and with better lasting results. Most salons and skin care clinics offer discounts when a series or package is purchased. This is just to provide a more consistent follow up and ensures that a client may return to finish treating the condition that they first addressed during the initial visit.

8. Are there other techniques employed with microderm?

Answer: Yes, microderm is also used in conjunction with other treatments, depending upon the client's need to encourage peeling, hydration or lightening hyperpigmentation of the skin. Topical solutions such as those that contain Vitamin C may be used to further stimulate the fibroblasts, or a nutritional peel solution for your skin type.
